During
my studies at Hunter College where I am nearing completion
on my MFA degree, I studied the
theory of art. However, my art is not derived from theory nor
does it play a large part in my work. Instead, a call and response
approach keeps the energy flowing through the piece. Working
art on a panel allows for a more interesting process. This
often includes sanding, working on the ground, and drawing
directly into the surface. It is important to me that the tick
of the artist's hand shows. I believe it makes for a more sincere
and interesting gesture. Stemming from influences such as sign
painting, pop art and graffiti, I attempt to create personal
narratives. I see my painting as
a regurgitation of popular culture through a personal vantage
point. Often, I document what’s going on in my life through
a humorous parody. I transform bits of many art references
into my work to make a new commentary or stance. As we no longer
view
the world as a singular whole, but as composed of several parts,
sometimes seemingly unrelated. For this reason, my subject
matter is varied. It comes from the fragmentation and breakdown
of images,
which can stand for a single thought and its components. The
flat map-like style of paint handling displays the personal
subject matter in a detached look with the emphasis on the
removal of
meaning. Scale shifts and color emphasis designate importance
in the read. The hyper-saturated color portrays the artificiality
and displacement of current culture.
